New York City police have confirmed the 28-year-old Perth-born was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday.
"He was found unconscious at the apartment and pronounced dead," a police spokeswoman said.
Police spokesman Paul Browne says he was found by his housekeeper at his apartment in the trendy SoHo neighbourood.
"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," Mr Browne said.
Celebrity website TMZ.com reports that Ledger was found at 3:35pm (7:35am AEDT).
Ledger, the star on Brokeback Mountain, has a two-year-old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams.
He was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film The Dark Knight.
