FRIDAY: The day with the flight drama and the cocktail party.
The flight drama: Okay, maybe "drama" is a little bit of an overstatement. But I wrote the following on Friday at the airport, so I figure I may as well post it.
So anyway, I eventually arrived in Melbourne and made my way to my hotel. I met up with
garneteve, and basically just had time to grab a quick dinner and get changed, and then
garneteve,
mcalex22 and I made our way to the cocktail party.
The cocktail party: The cocktail party was... interesting. I think some of my thoughts should go behind a locked post... Basically, I think that some people could maybe use some lessons in social etiquette. However, it was still good fun, and I’m definitely glad I went.
The stars all made an appearance and it was nice to see them in a more relaxed environment. David and Kavan both looked gorgeous (though I was a little sad to learn that I’m taller than both of them in my heels) and I had a nice chat with David (and there might have been other people there too!!)
I (we) discovered that David is a big Firefly fan. He said it was the best sci-fi on TV, and he included Stargate in that. He watched it when it was first shown, and he didn’t understand why it was cancelled. He didn’t enjoy the movie as much, and was absolutely devastated when Wash died. He also loved Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and he thinks Nathan Fillion is hilarious.
Maybe this is a little "psychologisty" of me, but I actually loved just sitting back watching David (in a casual, "looking-in-that-general-direction" way rather than a crazy stalkerish staring way!!). I discovered that there are at least two types of David Hewlett attention. Basically, David always (and I mean ALWAYS) seems genuinely interested in what the other person is talking about, and always (from what I saw) pays complete attention. But there is a sort of attention that goes beyond that. I can best describe this sort of attention as the way that McKay gets when he finds a new piece of technology or describes his latest brilliant idea! It’s that excited look that he gets, when it really seems as though he’s gone beyond his incredible niceness, and is just loving the conversation. (David had this look when he was talking about Firefly).
I love that (from my observation) David never once looked bored, or looked like he wasn’t really interested and there were times when he seemed to just be completely happy to be having a great conversation with someone he was glad to talk to. So, in conclusion, David Hewlett, how are you so awesome?
Oh, and I must mention a hilarious conversation that
mcalex22 and I had (this isn’t at all related to the stars – I just want to put it here for completeness and because I have a terrible memory).
mcalex22 mentioned a news story about virgins who were paying for escorts. However, rather than "escorts" I heard "astronauts"! < start joking > Hey, you never know! We are in an economic downturn, and NASA might be facing some serious budget cuts. Maybe times are hard, so they’re willing to give that little bit more for their country!!< /end joking > Ha! It still makes me laugh now!
Anyway, after a while, a band started up, and they were too loud for the venue. You could no longer hear people talk, so the stars basically immediately left, and we left soon after.
We wandered along to the Crown, got a coffee, and caught up with my Adelaide buddies (here after referred to as LS, SB and HD).
Overall, it was a great night, and a brilliant start to the trip.

So, it’s currently Friday and I’m sitting at Adelaide Airport, waiting for my flight. Apparently some flight this morning was cancelled, so they put other people on the plane that I was meant to be on (which just left) and now I’m on a later flight. What a load of crap! So, that’s taken away a little of my happy glow. I’m now thinking shiny David Hewlett thoughts, while listening to King’s of Leon’s Sex on Fire on repeat, trying to get my happiness back! I guess it’s not too bad. I’ll still be at Melbourne by 4pm – time to get to my hotel and change for the cocktail party (where I should meet David Hewlett himself!) Okay, I’m happy again now!
