Armageddon Expo - Post 5 (Sunday)

SUNDAY: Day 2 of Armageddon

Teasers:

Once again, it was an amazing day. The crowds were less intense and it felt like the organisers and volunteers were less stressed. Due to my delayed flight on Friday, I didn't have time to shop in Melbourne, so I was able to justify getting another David Hewlett photo! Who am I kidding? I would have justified it anyway!!

An autograph with David Hewlett:
I paid for the photo token, and then lined up for my final David Hewlett autograph. Once again, there were some nice people in the line, so it was lovely chatting to them.

David arrived and looked fabulous! He was wearing a nice black shirt, which is a good look for him!

Guh! That man is just adorable!

I decided to get the photo of myself and him from the day before signed, and the conversation between us was so great! It went a little something like this:

David: (looks at the photo) "Oh wow! Look how good we look!"
Katie: "Yeah, it turned out really well. You look great!"
Dude sitting next to David: [some sort of agreement]
David: "We both look gooood! (looks at it for a few more seconds, then looks up at me again, and smiles broadly) Who am I making this out to?"
Katie: "To Katie, please."
David: "Oh right, that's T.I.E?"
Katie: "Yep, that's right. K.A.T.I.E."
David: (writes) "Katie! Good looking Luv David Hewlett"
Katie: "Awww!" (*massive grin*)

I then made a joke about him referring to himself. The message was written in black on his blue shirt, so I pointed out that he wrote it on himself, and joked about the message being "Hey, look how cute I look?" or something! He thought that was great, and joked that he should write that for the next person!!

It was such a lovely conversation, and David thought I looked "gooood"!! *grins*

Photos with Gary Jones and Kavan Smith:
Anyway, the day before, SB, LS, HD and I had felt a little bad for Gary Jones. He was with Kavan for autographs and photos and (as you'd expect) most of the attention was for Kavan. So we decided to get a group shot with Gary. That way it was only $10 each, which is well worth paying, and is a lot better than paying $40, which none of us could justify. So, we had that photo, then [profile] derry667, [personal profile] mcalex22, [profile] yokiem [personal profile] starrylizard, [personal profile] garneteve and I had a group shot with my other Kavan token.

After that, I spent a while wondering around. Up to this point, I really hadn't seen much of the stalls there, so it was nice to see all of the geeky stuff. I bought a stargate keyring (which I think I'll try to make into a necklace) and I bought the 2009 SGA calendar.

Doug Jones' panel:
Next, I headed upstairs and caught the last part of Doug Jones' panel. He seemed lovely too! Oh, and he told a story that made me love David Hyde Pierce even more than I already did. Doug did the body for Abe Sapien in Hellboy but they wanted to dub someone else's voice. Doug was a little upset by this, so they allowed him to do the lines and said they'd consider him. However, in the end, although Doug's performance was great, they decided that they could make more money from the popularity of a bigger star. So, they asked David Hyde Pierce to do the voice for the character. Doug explained that when David heard Doug's lines (through the headphones when doing his own version) he couldn't work out what he was doing there. Basically, he thought Doug's performance was excellent, and realised that there was no performance related reason to dub the voice. Although David did the voice for the character, he decided (out of respect for Doug) to completely remove himself from anything else to do with the movie. He isn't even credited. And when the animated stuff and then Hellboy 2 came to be, he declined. In the Hollywood world of egos and competition, I imagine that niceness of that level would be extremely rare.

Anyway, I thought Doug was great, but I was really there to see Andee and then Kavan.

Andee Frizzell's panel:
Andee was lovely. I must admit that I wasn't too interested in seeing her, but she was incredibly funny, interesting and nice. And she's absolutely gorgeous too.

Again, because I suspect the panels will probably be posted, I'm not going to say too much about it. She did tell a hilarious story about trying to visit a Chinese massage parlour in Auckland which turned out to be ... well, let's just say that "massage therapy" is sometimes an euphemism for something else! She also seemed to love being a wraith, she's a bit of a fantasy geek (and loves Harry Potter) and she told a great story about rocking up to the wrap party after season 1, and getting incredibly strange reactions from most of the cast and crew. Apparently a lot of them had never seen her without the prosthetics, so they had no idea why this woman was talking to them in such a friendly manner!

Kavan Smith's panel:
Next up was Kavan. Kavan actually seemed tired. He explained that he'd fallen asleep at about midnight, but had then been woken up by "kids" a couple of hours later and couldn't get back to sleep. So the poor thing seemed a little in need of sleep. He also seemed to be holding back for the first 40 minutes because there were kids there. They left with about 15 minutes to go, and then Kavan told some pretty hilarious (non PG) stories, and swore a lot too.

That said, Kavan's panel was still good. He told some amusing little stories about David (who, he says, is always complaining), he did a hilarious impression of Joe Flanigan, he revealed that he was in prison (I didn't know that before), he talked about some of his other current and past projects... and through it all, he was very, very pretty!

I love this thoughtful look. Kavan is so pretty when he concentrates!

He looks good in black and white too!

A final photo with David Hewlett:
After Kavan's panel, I rushed down to get my other David Hewlett photo. Again, he was lovely. I think he greated me "hello again", and then whilst we were waiting for the photographer, I said "You should have heard some of the stories that Kavan told us about you!". He responded: "Lies! All lies!". I then said "Apparently you like to complain. A lot." and David responded, "Yeah, that's true!" It was a nice little interaction.

Anyway, that's about it. We grabbed a late lunch, then I headed back to get my David Hewlett photo (again, I think it turned out well). It was basically a perfect weekend! I reckon I'll have to go next year too!!

By the way, I have a few videos of Kavan Smith's panel and David Hewlett's panel. If there's a lot of interest, I can upload those for people.
