SGA Countdown - Rodney McKay
Tuesday: The second (and main) reason for my love of SGA – Rodney McKay
Where do I start!?!? For those of you who know me (or have even looked at my journal) you’ll know that I adore Rodney McKay.
It wasn’t always that way though. When he first appeared in 48 Hours on SG1, I hated him. I actually hated him. I thought he was rude, annoying, and basically a jerk. However, since then his character has evolved so much, and with every episode, we see more layers of Rodney McKay – He is now no longer just arrogant and self-centred, we’ve also discovered that he’s incredibly caring, heroic, funny and sarcastic ("Lets talk about it for a really long time. That'll help for sure").
I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when I started loving him, but I know that by the end of Hide and Seek, there was no turning back – I was obsessed! That episode showed everything that I love about McKay – it showed his jovial antics with Sheppard, his fear, his snark, and ultimately, his bravery. The "invulnerable" moment is still one of my favourites from the whole show:

Weir: I'm still trying to understand how you thought it was a good idea to test this device by having someone throw you off a balcony.
McKay: Oh, believe me, that's not the first thing we tried.
Sheppard: [Smug] I shot him.
[Dr. Weir gives him "the look"]
Sheppard: In the leg!
McKay: I'm invulnerable!
Weir: Aren't you the one who's always spouting off about how proper and careful scientific procedure must be adhered to?
McKay: [Smug] In-vul-nerable!
Talking about vulnerability, I have a real soft-spot for emotional vulnerability, and Rodney McKay has loads of that. I simply adore the way that Rodney McKay (or more accurately David Hewlett) can show so many emotions. When he’s excited or passionate about something, you can actually feel that excitement. When he’s annoyed, his anger seems to radiate across the screen, and the way that he shows hurt and pain is just so believable that I can feel myself hurting for him. We need some pictures to demonstrate that amazing range of emotions:
Look how happy he when he realises he isn’t dying in "Hot Zone"!

His recording in "Letters From Pegasus" is another of my favourites – here he is happily talking about Sam. I just adore his crooked mouth and geeky smile!

He also does arrogant superiority amazingly well. That arrogance is hot. Very hot.

He’s also hot when he thinks he’s dying...

And he’s hot when he thinks he’s lost Sheppard’s trust...

Next, we have all the physical reasons why I love Rodney McKay. First, there is his amazing blue eyes – they have so much depth that you feel like you could drown...

And those exquisite eye lashes...

Then, there are his hands, arms and shoulders. I love how expressive he is with his hands – they always seem to be moving, and as for his manly arms and broad shoulders – I think these pictures speak for themselves!

"The Defiant One" is another of my favourite Rodney McKay episodes. He shows his compassionate side as he tries to console Dr Gall, and (as explained by Dr. Gall) we can clearly see how much Rodney has changed – he really does want to get out there and help Sheppard. Then we get to see him using a gun – there is nothing hotter in my mind!

Don’t we wish we could have him tied up like this!

So, in conclusion: Rodney McKay = HOT! Now, what does everyone else think?? Feel free to comment with opinions, pictures or anything else relating to Rodney McKay.

By the way, love that icon! :D

He's my favorite and is pretty much the main reason why I watch the show! And even in the WORST episode (The Tower) I still love his scenes!
I love how he's changed since his time on SG1 - these days he knows exactly what it means to be on a team and what it's like to have a teamate in trouble, and to be the one on trouble with only your friends to count on.
I love all of his scenes with John, Carson, Redak and anyone else really but those are the top three.
.. and I might have to do my own post all about Rodney because I could probably go on forever...

And I agree that (despite being a bad episode) he had some good lines in The Tower.
Baldric: "I prefer to imagine the first possibility."
McKay: "Yes, yes, the power of positive thinking. Very good. While you do that, I will rely on my experience and expertise".
Baldric: "You said you'd never done this before".
McKay: "General expertise! Will you be quiet while I do this?"
I could go on forever about how great he is as well! :D

I agree, totally. I only have one thing to add:
Rodney has pretty, pretty skin. *g*

I really wish I was that sheet. :)
I swear that man was made for cuddling - look at those broad shoulders and strong arms... *dreamy sigh*
Rodney is love. Thanks for sharing! :D

Hot Zone was a great McKay episode - not only was he looking hot with the tight blue top, he was also so brave when he thought he was going to die, and then just so happy when he realised he wasn't. I just love that moment! :)

Lovely choice of caps and reasons and - whoa! Just whoa!!!

I'm actually part of the few who actually liked him during SG-1. Although he was an a**hole for his two appearances, there were glimpses of something deeper: "Why are you telling me this?" "Hospital gowns make me hot."
...I love sarcasm.
I can keep rambling, but this is your time. So, I'm just gonna conclude with: *SQUEE!*
no subject
He did have some very funny lines in SG1, but in "48 Hours" he was so quick to dismiss Sam and give up on Teal'c, I just had to hate him! He was a lot nicer in "Redemption" - but my love started after we saw more layers to his character in SGA. I'm really glad he still has that snarky sarcasm - I love it!
I could ramble all day about Rodney, but I think that "squee" is a good conclusion! :D

There's nothing about Rodney McKay that isn't awesome :) I'd add a cap of the overly-sensitive nipples, but again I have to go. I should really stop reading these in the morning! :D

I've given up trying to define why I love Mckay. My stereotypical male would usually be Shep ( tall, dark hair, great eyes, smile like you mean it) but there's just something I adore about Mckay.
All the time I watched 48hrs I was saying how badly he was behaving but the little devil on my shoulder kept whispering in my ear "but you would.....wouldn't you!" Well, yes I would!
Now we are starting to see the "inner" Mckay on SGA, it's just getting better and better (...read more obsessive and addicted)
Rodney = love!

I can't wait to see more of him this season. Hopefully it'll live up to my expectations.
lol at your icon!

and locked us in the bathroom,
when the Genii have plant a bomb,
and things are looking to go Ka-Boom.
When storms are coming, and stars explode,
when you're underwater and could implode,
Who do you look to to save the day?
who you gonna call? Rodney McKay!
I love Rodney too *dreams*

Rodney is love. *joins you in the dreams of Rodney*

From this moment, I waited his next guest starring, and then I saw he had his own serie, and then 'in-vul-ne-ra-ble!' and his friendship with Sheppard and...
When you think some people only see his arrogance and not what's under, subtle but there, which make him a so good character. They miss something.

As much as I love Rodney's snark and sarcasm, I love that there are so many more levels to his character. McKay is love. :D

I particularly love Crazy!Rodney. Like when he was hopped up on the Wraith serum or stuck in the sinking puddlejumper. He's so cute when he's nuts!!

My love for Rodney increases everytime I see an episode too. Just when I think he couldn't possibly be more lovable, something else will happen that will make me adore him even more.
And I agree, he's great when crazy --- I loved it when he knocked out those guards (And THAT'S what happens when you back a brilliant scientist into a corner!), and Grace Under Pressure is still my favourite Rodney episode.
Lets hope there are more great Rodney scenes this season! :)

Friday!! Yay!

It actually took me a little while to feel the McKay-love but when I did it really hit me like ten tons of bricks. The definitive moment was in The Defiant One. John says something about parents not teaching their kids to drive and McKay turns to him with a classic Rodney-face and snaps something like 'I am both insulted and touched by that.' I then had my first audible squeeeee moment.
I love his humour and his snark and his lovely face and most of all I love the fact that he's flawed, that he's not perfect. That makes him so attractive to me.

I have been writing the fourth reason for my love of SGA (The John and Rodney show) and I just wrote about that driving scene from The Defiant One. Its definitely one of my favourites!
And I agree that his flaws make him a lot more lovable. Its now only a couple more days till we'll have more SGA - I offically can't wait! :D

Rodney McKay is the reason I watch this show. I like the other characters, but Rodney has stolen my heart.

And Rodney McKay is one of them.
Plus he's just amazing.
(haha oh and funny story-ish. Part of his Letters from Pegasus video is my writing. I was so excited when I watched it...He's my favorite character to write for)

I adored everything that he said in the Letters from Pegasus video! Are you serious that you wrote some of it!??! Consider me seriously impressed if you did! :D

It's an amazing butt. I also agree that he's an amazing actor - he can show basically every emotion with complete believability, and he's done so many different roles - he's just awesome!
This reply has now taken me about 5 minutes... because I've been distracted by your icon! :P
Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Lord David! :)
I also noticed you added me to your friends list, so I've added you back! Good to meet you! :)

i honestly have liked him since '48 hours' (though i don't like the episode). 'redemption ii' sealed the deal. the true magic of david hewlett's acting came to me when, in '48 hours,' he said 'that's why it's called a deadline.' something about the way he said it ... i just liked it. there's a sorta sorrow in it, as if he's sorry, but there's nothing he can do, and he honestly believes that 48 hours is *all* they have, why can't you see that?! it wasn't just 'yea, he's going to be dead. that's why it's a deadline.' it was ... well, we know rodney now, and it was so rodney.
umm, i'm going to go away now ... :)

I think when I first saw him in SG1, Carter was the expert, so I didn't like that this guy just walked in and immediately started questionning all of her decisions... but in retrospect, his points were all completely valid.
Anyway, Rodney McKay is love! :D
