Sweeney Todd was finally released here in Australia! I saw it last night and I adored it! Although I was really looking forward to this movie, honestly, I was a little worried that I'd hate it. I think that Johnny Depp is an amazing actor, and Tim Burton is a genius, but I have been a little disappointed by some of Tim's movies.

Where most directors are story-tellers, I think that Tim Burton is more of an artist, and the 'look' of his films is always amazing. Sometimes, however, I think that his movies have ... lacked something. It's almost like the parts of the movie (the story telling, the directing, the acting, etc) are all so wonderful, that I expect something better once they're all put together.

For example, in Corpse Bride, the visuals were amazing, the acting was amazing, the CGI or whatever they used was amazing,... and I liked the movie a lot... but ... I just didn't love it.

But anyway, I'm getting side tracked here! The point is, I was VERY impressed by Sweeney Todd.

I think that Johnny Depp was brilliant (particularly considering that he has never sung on camera before), and the movie was so well directed and put together. Tim Burton is a genius!

And now I can't get this song out of my head:

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
And it's filled with people who are filled with shit
And the vermin of the world inhabit it...

I really liked the movie. It was bloody (and I don't usually like that), but it was just so good.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it too! I'm still so impressed by Johnny in that movie. I think I'll have to see it again soon!! :)

Johnny was excellent in it. He has a good singing voice.

I agree, an excellent movie. I didn't like the play, but Burton cut out an hour for the movie and it really was so much better!

Johnny was wonderful, I really hope he finally wins his well deserved Oscar!

I haven't actually seen the whole play, but I did hear that a lot of it was left out. Glad to hear that the cuts improved it!

And yes, Johnny definitely deserves an Oscar for that performance! :)

I loved Johnny Depp, and I enjoyed the movie up until the point where it digressed into a teen slasher flick... until then, much love. I don't know, I just think Tim Burton is more creative than that; all that gushing :o)

There was a lot of blood! I felt that it was quite stylised, and sort of artist (in a completely gross way) so it didn't really bother me. I do understand how that could get in the way of your enjoyment though...

I've been in two minds about whether to watch this myself. I'm not a big lover of musicals - I like a few but not generally love them (the big exception being the musical episode of Buffy - I adore that!). However, I like Tim Burton style, blood does not bother me (unless it ventures into the "gorenography" style of films like Saw and Hostel were just the screenshots are enough to put me off! - I'm fine with CSI levels of blood or comedyesque Kill Bill levels too) and I love Johnny Depp (as an actor and a sexy guy) so I was undecided. You've sold me! Now to convince my fella to accompany me...

The musical episode of Buffy is brilliant!! :)

I really hope that you enjoy the movie. Although there is a lot of singing, I think that it's very well done, and worth seeing just for Johnny's great acting in it. I think that he plays the role very very well. :)

Just watched Sweeney Todd and loved it! My fella enjoyed it too. I'm having to snag that delicious Johnny Depp pic now - thank you! Is it wrong to still be attracted to Johnny Depp when he's playing a ghoulish psychopath? Mind you, my fella was hugely attracted to Helena Bonham Carter's gothic pie-making sociopath.
Seriously though, great movie - thanks for the recommendation! :D
