Wednesday: The third reason for my love of SGA – The Humour
I’m going to start off this post by briefly explaining how I first became interested in Stargate. It may shock some of you to hear that I have only been watching Stargate for about a year, and although I did watch The X-Files and Sliders, I was never really a big sci-fi fan.
One of my best friends has been watching SG1 since it first started. She knew that I loved Richard Dean Anderson from his MacGyver days, and so she tried time and time again to get me to watch SG1. Everytime – for about 8 years – I refused. The thing that she had failed to mention was just how funny Stargate is. Eventually, after about 8 years of her bugging me, I agreed to watch it, and I borrowed Season 1. After only a few episodes I was hooked.
Although there are many things that I love about Stargate, the humour is definitely one of my favourite aspects, and I think it’s probably the thing that has kept me watching. In almost every episode there is something that makes me laugh out loud. They have some hilarious sarcasm, some very humorous pop-culture references, and even occasionally some physical comedy. Then there is the stuff that is funny because it is such a "human response" that we could see ourselves having. So, here are some of my favourite funny moments from SGA.
I’m usually not a massive fan of ‘slapstick’ sort of comedy, but for some reason I find it hilarious when it involves John or Rodney. The scene in Condemned when he was trying to copy Teyla, and break the log on his leg was brilliant! He’s so adorkable, it just makes me smile!

Then there was the scene in Siege 3, when Rodney was trying to be "badass" to the Wraith, and dropped the clip out of the gun! David Hewlett does the terrified reaction to that so well!

I also find the pop-culture references absolutely hilarious. I loved when McKay said "what I am, MacGyver?", and the time when he referred to Teyla and Ronon and Conon and Xena was brilliant! I also thought the Superman thing was very amusing! That scene was mostly funny because of the wonderful comic timing of the actors, and the way that they all replied in such a serious manner:
Sheppard: McKay will come up with something.
McKay: I will try, but despite what you all may think, I am not Superman.
[Sheppard looks around]
Sheppard: Was anyone seriously thinking that?
[Weir, Teyla and the other scientist shake their heads 'No']
Ford: No sir.
Zelenka: Never.
They also have absolutely brilliant sarcastic and snarky replies. It’s hard to choose my favourite because there are just so many!
McKay’s response to Lorne (about Ford) in "Runner"
McKay: Oh yeah, when we weren't out on harrowing missions, we used to hang out together. I'd share my dreams of self-sustaining fusion, he would talk about how you could sever a man's torso with a P-90.
McKay and Sheppard in Aurora:
Sheppard “Anyway to figure out what they’re saying?”
McKay “Yes, of course it says right here ‘why is the smart one having to stop and answer so many questions?’”
McKay to Grodin in “The Siege”:
McKay “You know, your masterful grip on the blatantly obvious continues to impress me Peter.”
Sheppard to McKay in “Hot Zone”:
Sheppard “Get as far away from the nuclear explosion as possible that’s good advice Rodney, thanks.”
I also think that Stargate is funny because they so commonly do and say things that we can imagine ourselves doing or saying. The perfect example is the part in “The Siege” after they’ve cloaked the city – McKay whispers “I don’t think they’ve detected us”, and then Weir whispers back “why are you whispering?” I can really see myself having that conversation with someone! There is no reason to whisper, but it’s just the sort of thing that people do!
The bit in The Storm where McKay and Sheppard talk about the grounding stations is similar:
Maj. John Sheppard: Wait a second, are these things even close to a transporter?
Dr. Rodney McKay: Uh... yes. Elizabeth's is.
Maj. John Sheppard: And mine?
Dr. Rodney McKay: It's a brisk walk away.
Maj. John Sheppard: And by "brisk" you mean "far"?
Dr. Rodney McKay: [nods] And by "walk" I mean "run".
I could seriously just go on all day about my favourite funny moments, and then I could have another whole post with the funny expressions that Sheppard makes. *points at the pictures below*

Oh, and this post would be incomplete without a reference to the clowns! Oh how I loved Sheppard’s explanation of the clowns in “The Hive”! Again, there was just such brilliant comic timing from Joe:
Sheppard: The clowns? Oh, yeah, the clowns... we fight them too. Entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagens. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending 'em in.
I know that there must be hundreds of other hilarious moments that I haven’t mentioned… so, tell me, what are your favourite humorous moments from SGA?!?!

Date: 2006-07-12 07:21 am (UTC)And they started so well, right from Rising.
Jack: Daniel, warm welcome.
Daniel: Wasn't me. How did you manage to . . .
Jack: Keep my ass from being blown out of the sky? The exceptional flying of Major John Sheppard. He likes it here.
Daniel: Exceptional? You like it here?
Jack: Let's say we skip to the part where you start talking real fast.
Jack: This isn't a long trip so I'll be as succinct as possible. (Long silence)
Sheppard: Well, that's pretty succinct.
Jack: Thank you
Possibly that was my love of Jack shining through *g*
Ford: Gateship One ready to go.
Sheppard: Gateship One? A little puddle jumper like this?!
Ford: It’s a ship, it goes through the gate. Gateship One.
Sheppard: Oh no, no, no, that’s all wrong.
Ford: Dr. McKay thought it was cool.
Sheppard: Oh, okay. Well, it’s official. You don’t get to name anything. Ever. Flight, this is . . . Puddle Jumper. We’re go for launch.
McKay: This is Flight. I thought we were going with Gateship?
Sheppard: Negative, Flight.
McKay: Stand by. (looks at Weir) It’s a ship, it goes through the gate . . . fine. Puddle Jumper, you are clear for launch.
I just love, love, how they take time out from an important and kinda terrifying mission to mess around with each other :)
McKay: You got your eye on anyone?
Beckett: Not really.
McKay: Actually, I was talking to the mouse. But now you mention it, some of those Athosian women are pretty hot. And we did just save them from the Wraith, so we got to trade on that while we can, you know? Before they discover that we're not actually that cool.
Sheppard: You like football?
Weir: No, not really.
Sheppard: Oh, come on, it’s real, it's unpredictable, it's full of passion and . . . beer. Hotdogs.
McKay: Cheerleaders.
Oh Rodney! :)
Ford: Anyone else call shotgun?
Sheppard: Just going to drive around the planet, check it out.
Ford: Oh, you're just checking out the planet. Never mind, then, that's cool. I mean, I've got better things to be doing than cruising around the planet in a space ship.
Sheppard: You're like a kid, you know that?
Ford: Yes, sir. I brought along something to eat on the ride.
Sheppard: What's that?
Ford: How about a nice turkey sandwich?
Sheppard: Let's go.
I miss Ford!
Sheppard: You think it's worth checking out?
McKay: Any significant energy emission generally indicates technological civilization.
Sheppard: So you thinks it's worth checking out.
McKay: I'm sorry, yes. Energy field good.
McKay: You’re right! If only we had a magical tool that could slow down time. I foolishly left mine on Earth, did you bring yours?
Zelenka: You know, you’re not pleasant when you’re like this, McKay.
McKay: I’m always like this.
Zelenka: My point exactly.
YAY! More snark! And from Radek! That's always priceless :)
And because we're on Radek and this moment is just too cute.
Weir: Well, keep me in the loop.
Zelenka: You are the loop!
McKay flirting could be it's own entire post too *g* but for now..
Allina: It doesn’t look much like a map. I guess I was wrong.
McKay: Possibly. Although just because you thought it was a map, it doesn’t make your initial assumption bad or incorrect. Well, incorrect, yes, but . . . it was a good guess.
LOL, and I was just gonna do a couple from Rising. Anyway I guess that was your point :)

Date: 2006-07-12 11:51 am (UTC)I adored that gateship moment - how could I leave that out of my post!?! :D
In fact, I adored each of those moments! Your comment "McKay flirting could be it's own entire post too" had me laughing out loud - I love it so much when he tries to flirt! (The long speech about dinner in Duet - too cute!!) :D
Thanks for posting those great moments *still hasn't stopped smiling!*

Date: 2006-07-15 05:01 am (UTC)Ford and Teyla battle it out as my favorite character. I think Ford's slowly winning the war. Ford's just such a cute little puppy! I wanna bring him home and make him better. *ponders* I wonder if the retrovirus would work on him, or if it would strip all humanity from him? Either way, love Ford. Ford better come back.
