My SGA Countdown - The Humour

Wednesday: The third reason for my love of SGA – The Humour
I’m going to start off this post by briefly explaining how I first became interested in Stargate. It may shock some of you to hear that I have only been watching Stargate for about a year, and although I did watch The X-Files and Sliders, I was never really a big sci-fi fan.
One of my best friends has been watching SG1 since it first started. She knew that I loved Richard Dean Anderson from his MacGyver days, and so she tried time and time again to get me to watch SG1. Everytime – for about 8 years – I refused. The thing that she had failed to mention was just how funny Stargate is. Eventually, after about 8 years of her bugging me, I agreed to watch it, and I borrowed Season 1. After only a few episodes I was hooked.
Although there are many things that I love about Stargate, the humour is definitely one of my favourite aspects, and I think it’s probably the thing that has kept me watching. In almost every episode there is something that makes me laugh out loud. They have some hilarious sarcasm, some very humorous pop-culture references, and even occasionally some physical comedy. Then there is the stuff that is funny because it is such a "human response" that we could see ourselves having. So, here are some of my favourite funny moments from SGA.
I’m usually not a massive fan of ‘slapstick’ sort of comedy, but for some reason I find it hilarious when it involves John or Rodney. The scene in Condemned when he was trying to copy Teyla, and break the log on his leg was brilliant! He’s so adorkable, it just makes me smile!

Then there was the scene in Siege 3, when Rodney was trying to be "badass" to the Wraith, and dropped the clip out of the gun! David Hewlett does the terrified reaction to that so well!

I also find the pop-culture references absolutely hilarious. I loved when McKay said "what I am, MacGyver?", and the time when he referred to Teyla and Ronon and Conon and Xena was brilliant! I also thought the Superman thing was very amusing! That scene was mostly funny because of the wonderful comic timing of the actors, and the way that they all replied in such a serious manner:
Sheppard: McKay will come up with something.
McKay: I will try, but despite what you all may think, I am not Superman.
[Sheppard looks around]
Sheppard: Was anyone seriously thinking that?
[Weir, Teyla and the other scientist shake their heads 'No']
Ford: No sir.
Zelenka: Never.
They also have absolutely brilliant sarcastic and snarky replies. It’s hard to choose my favourite because there are just so many!
McKay’s response to Lorne (about Ford) in "Runner"
McKay: Oh yeah, when we weren't out on harrowing missions, we used to hang out together. I'd share my dreams of self-sustaining fusion, he would talk about how you could sever a man's torso with a P-90.
McKay and Sheppard in Aurora:
Sheppard “Anyway to figure out what they’re saying?”
McKay “Yes, of course it says right here ‘why is the smart one having to stop and answer so many questions?’”
McKay to Grodin in “The Siege”:
McKay “You know, your masterful grip on the blatantly obvious continues to impress me Peter.”
Sheppard to McKay in “Hot Zone”:
Sheppard “Get as far away from the nuclear explosion as possible that’s good advice Rodney, thanks.”
I also think that Stargate is funny because they so commonly do and say things that we can imagine ourselves doing or saying. The perfect example is the part in “The Siege” after they’ve cloaked the city – McKay whispers “I don’t think they’ve detected us”, and then Weir whispers back “why are you whispering?” I can really see myself having that conversation with someone! There is no reason to whisper, but it’s just the sort of thing that people do!
The bit in The Storm where McKay and Sheppard talk about the grounding stations is similar:
Maj. John Sheppard: Wait a second, are these things even close to a transporter?
Dr. Rodney McKay: Uh... yes. Elizabeth's is.
Maj. John Sheppard: And mine?
Dr. Rodney McKay: It's a brisk walk away.
Maj. John Sheppard: And by "brisk" you mean "far"?
Dr. Rodney McKay: [nods] And by "walk" I mean "run".
I could seriously just go on all day about my favourite funny moments, and then I could have another whole post with the funny expressions that Sheppard makes. *points at the pictures below*

Oh, and this post would be incomplete without a reference to the clowns! Oh how I loved Sheppard’s explanation of the clowns in “The Hive”! Again, there was just such brilliant comic timing from Joe:
Sheppard: The clowns? Oh, yeah, the clowns... we fight them too. Entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagens. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending 'em in.
I know that there must be hundreds of other hilarious moments that I haven’t mentioned… so, tell me, what are your favourite humorous moments from SGA?!?!

Date: 2006-07-12 11:43 am (UTC)John's faces just crack me up so much! He's hilarious! :D

Date: 2006-07-12 05:46 am (UTC)It's also why I think The Joss is god. Because I think that humour makes you all up and happy and bonds you to the characters. You like them, so when they are then in danger or having a dramatic moment you're still right there with them.

Date: 2006-07-12 11:46 am (UTC)Going through the stargate or killing vampires so alright on its own, but the humour is what really gets (and keeps) the audience involved.
Lets hope that they keep the humour going in season 3.

Date: 2006-07-12 07:21 am (UTC)And they started so well, right from Rising.
Jack: Daniel, warm welcome.
Daniel: Wasn't me. How did you manage to . . .
Jack: Keep my ass from being blown out of the sky? The exceptional flying of Major John Sheppard. He likes it here.
Daniel: Exceptional? You like it here?
Jack: Let's say we skip to the part where you start talking real fast.
Jack: This isn't a long trip so I'll be as succinct as possible. (Long silence)
Sheppard: Well, that's pretty succinct.
Jack: Thank you
Possibly that was my love of Jack shining through *g*
Ford: Gateship One ready to go.
Sheppard: Gateship One? A little puddle jumper like this?!
Ford: It’s a ship, it goes through the gate. Gateship One.
Sheppard: Oh no, no, no, that’s all wrong.
Ford: Dr. McKay thought it was cool.
Sheppard: Oh, okay. Well, it’s official. You don’t get to name anything. Ever. Flight, this is . . . Puddle Jumper. We’re go for launch.
McKay: This is Flight. I thought we were going with Gateship?
Sheppard: Negative, Flight.
McKay: Stand by. (looks at Weir) It’s a ship, it goes through the gate . . . fine. Puddle Jumper, you are clear for launch.
I just love, love, how they take time out from an important and kinda terrifying mission to mess around with each other :)
McKay: You got your eye on anyone?
Beckett: Not really.
McKay: Actually, I was talking to the mouse. But now you mention it, some of those Athosian women are pretty hot. And we did just save them from the Wraith, so we got to trade on that while we can, you know? Before they discover that we're not actually that cool.
Sheppard: You like football?
Weir: No, not really.
Sheppard: Oh, come on, it’s real, it's unpredictable, it's full of passion and . . . beer. Hotdogs.
McKay: Cheerleaders.
Oh Rodney! :)
Ford: Anyone else call shotgun?
Sheppard: Just going to drive around the planet, check it out.
Ford: Oh, you're just checking out the planet. Never mind, then, that's cool. I mean, I've got better things to be doing than cruising around the planet in a space ship.
Sheppard: You're like a kid, you know that?
Ford: Yes, sir. I brought along something to eat on the ride.
Sheppard: What's that?
Ford: How about a nice turkey sandwich?
Sheppard: Let's go.
I miss Ford!
Sheppard: You think it's worth checking out?
McKay: Any significant energy emission generally indicates technological civilization.
Sheppard: So you thinks it's worth checking out.
McKay: I'm sorry, yes. Energy field good.
McKay: You’re right! If only we had a magical tool that could slow down time. I foolishly left mine on Earth, did you bring yours?
Zelenka: You know, you’re not pleasant when you’re like this, McKay.
McKay: I’m always like this.
Zelenka: My point exactly.
YAY! More snark! And from Radek! That's always priceless :)
And because we're on Radek and this moment is just too cute.
Weir: Well, keep me in the loop.
Zelenka: You are the loop!
McKay flirting could be it's own entire post too *g* but for now..
Allina: It doesn’t look much like a map. I guess I was wrong.
McKay: Possibly. Although just because you thought it was a map, it doesn’t make your initial assumption bad or incorrect. Well, incorrect, yes, but . . . it was a good guess.
LOL, and I was just gonna do a couple from Rising. Anyway I guess that was your point :)

Date: 2006-07-12 11:51 am (UTC)I adored that gateship moment - how could I leave that out of my post!?! :D
In fact, I adored each of those moments! Your comment "McKay flirting could be it's own entire post too" had me laughing out loud - I love it so much when he tries to flirt! (The long speech about dinner in Duet - too cute!!) :D
Thanks for posting those great moments *still hasn't stopped smiling!*

Date: 2006-07-15 05:01 am (UTC)Ford and Teyla battle it out as my favorite character. I think Ford's slowly winning the war. Ford's just such a cute little puppy! I wanna bring him home and make him better. *ponders* I wonder if the retrovirus would work on him, or if it would strip all humanity from him? Either way, love Ford. Ford better come back.

Date: 2006-07-12 09:11 am (UTC)Poisoning the Well
McKay: No no no, he just doesn't like going through the Stargate.
Sheppard: He's worse than Dr. McCoy.
Teyla: Who?
Sheppard: The TV character that Dr. Beckett plays in real life.
Hide and Seek
Weir: I'm still trying to understand how you thought it was a good idea to test this device by having someone throw you off a balcony.
McKay: Believe me, that's not the first thing we tried.
Sheppard (smirking): I shot him.
(Weir gives him a look.)
Sheppard: In the leg!
McKay: I'm invulnerable!
Weir: Aren't you the one who's always spouting off about how proper and careful scientific procedure must be adhered to?
McKay: In-vul-ner-able.
Grodin: I'm thinking "Mr. Invincible."
Beckett: "Captain Untouchable."
Grodin: Ooh, that's good.
Epiphany
McKAY: What is it with you and ascended women?!
(John shrugs as the others come over to join him. Elizabeth looks at him.)
WEIR: Well -- the beard is interesting!
SHEPPARD: First thing to go when we get home.
and all of Mckay's speech to camera in Letters from Pegasus!
(no subject)
Date: 2006-07-12 11:56 am (UTC)The invulnerable bit was one of my favourites - I mentioned that in my post of Rodney love, and I was tempted to mention it again in the humour one - but (since i'm going to mention it again in my "The John and Rodney Show" post), I decided not to!
McKay was BRILLANT in Letters From Pegasus - "But still, I digress, where was I...uh... leadership" I just loved the whole thing! :D
And by the way, DH looks SO CUTE in that icon you posted with! :D

Date: 2006-07-12 09:28 am (UTC)I just re-watched The Storm and The Eye a couple of nights ago and that bit you've quoted had me in stitches. I adore dry sarcasm and Rodney has so got it down!
Omgomgomgomg, only three more sleeps until I can download it!! I'm so envious of everyone that can actually watch it on the Friday!
(no subject)
Date: 2006-07-12 12:45 pm (UTC)I think that quote about the transporters from The Storm might be my favourite quote from the whole series - it's just hilarious!
YAY for the new episodes! It'll be Saturday my time before I'll get to see the new episodes - hopefully they'll be uploaded really quickly so poor people like us who can't see them on TV can see them soon afterwards.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-07-12 01:40 pm (UTC)From "The Defiant One" after they've picked up the distress signal:
WEIR: So what are you saying?
McKAY: We have to go down and take a look.
WEIR (cynically): You have to. It took you almost fifteen hours to get there.
SHEPPARD: All the more reason we should have a look. We're already here.
GAUL: I should mention that the planet's atmosphere is extremely ionised. Radio communication could be difficult.
(Frantically, Rodney draws his hand across his throat to try to shut Brendan up.)
WEIR: And it would take at least fifteen hours to send out any sort of rescue.
McKAY: We'll be fine.
WEIR: Major?
SHEPPARD: I agree with McKay.
WEIR: Of course you do! How could either of you resist exploring a crashed alien spaceship?!
SHEPPARD: Exactly.
McKAY: I assure you our interest is purely professional, Elizabeth.
SHEPPARD: Seriously, the amount of intel we could gather from their weapons system -- codes, shields ...
WEIR: Alright. Proceed with extreme caution, please, and check in with me in three hours.
McKAY: Three hours is hardly enough time ...
SHEPPARD (interrupting him): Will do! Jumper One out.
And then from Coup D'etat when they're planing the raid:
SHEPPARD: The Special Ops guy's followed Ladon to M6R-867. Looks like he's occupied a warehouse in a bombed-out abandoned city.
McKAY: It was most likely destroyed by the Wraith and never re- inhabited.
SHEPPARD: He did a quick fly-over in a cloaked Jumper and sure enough there are about twenty life signs in the building.
McKAY: Well, twenty life signs on the whole *planet*, actually.
WEIR: So Cowen's intel was accurate?
McKAY: Yeah. It appears that way, yes.
SHEPPARD: Even if these men are highly trained and armed to the teeth ...
McKAY: ... which most probably they are not ...
SHEPPARD: ... they're no match for our guys.
(Elizabeth looks at John in surprise for a moment.)
WEIR: A raid?
SHEPPARD: Oh, yes, a raid! If this is their main base of operations, I'm willing to bet the ZeePM is there.
WEIR: And, what, just steal it?
McKAY: Well, the Brotherhood stole it from us, Ladon stole it from the Brotherhood – it's not really stealing, it's, um ...
SHEPPARD: ... recovery! Look, we tell Ladon we're ready to do business; he needs to send a dozen guys here to carry back supplies ...
McKAY: ... along with the ZedPM.
SHEPPARD: He won't do that but, sure, we can ask. When they get here, we detain them, leaving eight men in the building for two small strike teams to deal with.
WEIR: OK. It's worth the risk. Go get us a ZeePM!
I sware they are like to little boys trying to con their mother into letting them do something they shouldn't be doing! :O)
And Wier really needs to learn to say no to them!

Date: 2006-07-14 07:50 am (UTC)Teyla: Who?
Sheppard: The TV character that Dr. Beckett plays in real life.
That right there, *points* is GOLD.
Although the scene in Aurora where Teyla and Ronon BS Caldwell is just full of awesomeness. That whole episode is pretty much made of awesome though.
